How are problems Graded???
Short answer problems are graded with the intent to give as many points as possible.
Multiple choice problems are all or nothing.
- Each correct step that could lead to a correct solution usually will be given a point or a fraction of a point.
- The units of the solution are just as important as the answer itself. Therefore points will be given for correct units.
- It is important to give an answer that is consistent with the question. For example, if it asks for an equation, you should have just that. (an equal sign)
- Answers must be fully simplified and exact to receive full credit. 1/3 is not equal to .33. Therefore, fractions are encouraged, as are radical answers.
- If a formula or trig identity is incorrect is the first step of a problem, it is likely that no points will be given, since there is no chance of arriving at a correct solution. (HINT: memorize formulas and identities so you can apply them when appropriate.)
- In general if the answer to a problem is incorrect, expect to receive less than half of the points for that problem.
- See sample responses below and how they are graded.
